National Architectural Competition
Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil | 2009
Award: 2nd Place
A proposal for a new public square designed to become a major cultural and civic gathering space for the city of Natal. The design draws inspiration from the region's characteristic sand dunes, creating an artificial undulating landscape that integrates public spaces, water features, landscaping and flexible areas for cultural events.
The central feature is a spectacular floating Christmas Tree, formed by illuminated cables suspended from a helium balloon, creating a striking visual landmark and a unique nighttime experience. The design also incorporates a reflecting pool that can transform into an open-air amphitheatre, shaded communal areas, local vegetation and spaces for markets and public activities.
